What is Squarespace Bio Site? Pros and cons of using this feature

We’ve previously discussed why you should stop using Linktree and create your own links page in Squarespace, but recently, Squarespace has launched a new tool called Bio Site on their Unfold app that extends this concept!

Bio Site allows you to create simple, beautiful, and personalized landing pages to share your links. We’re all for new tools that streamline our online presence, but is Bio Site worth the hassle of migrating over?

In today’s blog post, we’ll dive into the pros and cons of using this new tool and whether it’s worth it to swap over.

What is Squarespace Bio Site?

Bio Site touts itself as an online business card of sorts – it’s a streamlined page where you can share all of your essential business links. We’re all familiar with the concept of Linktree and how it solved Instagram’s one “link-in-bio” problem, so to make an easy comparison, this new tool performs a very similar function but makes it 10x more aesthetically pleasing!

Pros of using Bio Site:

  • Beautiful, templated designs.

  • One of the most appealing things about this tool is that you’re basically guaranteed a beautiful landing page. Unfold expands on Squarespace’s idea of templated formats and has optimized Bio Site to display link-heavy pages in an easy-to-navigate way that presents information in a digestible manner.

  • It’s free!

  • Bio Site simply requires that you download the Unfold app and then you can get started right away. This low barrier to entry allows you to get things up and running while you put more extensive funnels in place.

  • A fair amount of integrations.

  • While Linktree mostly features text sections that link out to other websites, with Bio Site, you can integrate a plethora of other functions to your bio landing page! Some of our favorites include tips (integrate with a payment processor to receive tips), video sections (embed videos from other platforms that you’re on), posts (directly embed posts from your other social media channels), and music sections (share songs or playlists directly).

Cons of using Bio Site:

  • Templated designs mean less flexibility.

  • Sure, the templates are beautiful and you can always customize the sections, but it’s still not as flexible as a standalone page on a website you already own. When you create a specific mobile landing page on your already existing website, you not only connect them directly with your website, but you can also use additional design elements like images and graphics for a more engaging experience.

  • You never know if it might crash.

  • Linktree crashed in 2018 and you never know if Bio Site will crash as well. When your links are hosted on a separate app like Unfold, you put all the control in the developers hands. Even if a crash only lasts two hours, if it happens consistently time and time again, that could add up to a lot of missed conversions!

  • Now, we're not saying that hosting your links page on your own website mitigates all risk of crash, because Squarespace (or wherever you host your site) may occasionally be "down" or crash - but at least you should know what to expect with your own website.

  • It’s entirely app-based.

  • There is no desktop version of Bio Site. You have to edit the page entirely from the Unfold app so if you’re old-school like me and prefer to work on your computer, it might be a little frustrating.

  • Furthermore, if you’re someone who likes to streamline and simplify, another app simply creates more clutter. Another platform to sign up for…another platform to manage…another platform to memorize details for. It takes up a lot of mental space!

So, should you use Squarespace Bio Site for your Instagram Links page?

In summary, Bio Site is a beautiful platform with pre-templated designs that allows you to consolidate all your links into one location. It’s easy-to-use but not as flexible as building your own custom-page on an existing website.

If you’re just starting out and need to get something off the ground, we recommend Bio Sites because the process is just so easy. If you’re considering between Bio Sites and another “link in bio” platform like Linktree, Bio Sites takes the cake because of its integrations and aesthetic capabilities.

However, if you already have an existing custom-designed landing page, there’s really no sense in switching over. Having your own page on your own site ultimately provides the most stability and flexibility when it comes to driving your audience from a social media platform to your website.
